The south of Brazil is going through a dramatic moment as a result of the floods that have the entire country in suspense. And in that sense, Agustín Marchesín, goalkeeper of Gremio de Porto Alegre, Estudiantes’ rival in the Copa Libertadores, indicated in the last few hours that the domestic competition should come to a halt because “we cannot think about football or train. Now there are other priorities.”
Faced with this, there are great possibilities that the Brasileirao will be completely paralyzed starting next Monday, and something similar could happen with the participation of both Gremio and Inter in international competitions. In the case of the Tricolor, the aforementioned Libertadores, while in regards to its classic rival, the Copa Sudamericana, where it shares a group with Belgrano de Córdoba.
At the moment, Conmebol is analyzing the chance of withdrawing the two aforementioned teams from international competitions in which they are, as a result of the distressing situation that exists in that region of Brazil. Given this, both would have said place guaranteed, both for the Libertadores and for the Sudamericana, in 2025.
The truth is that this situation, if it occurs in a positive way, will benefit Estudiantes, who are very complicated in what has to do with Group C of the highest continental competition after falling in Bolivia.
