The three guitarists who would “nail it” in Pantera playing Dimebag Darrell according to Phil Demmel (ex-Machine Head): Zakk Wylde is not among them

If something cannot be denied Phil Demmel It is the ability to adapt. Due to twists of fate, beyond serving in the enormous Machine Head Between 2002 and 2018, the guitarist has helped put out fires in such iconic groups as Slayer, Lamb of God, Testament or Overkill; practically fleeting appearances in which he has shown great respect for the original material occupying a role in the background as a good hired musician worth it.

These virtues made him, as he confessed in the podcast The Metal Forgemany colleagues will point out as a possible replacement the irreplaceable Dimebag Darrell. Mission Impossibleas he explains in depth: “There are gigs that I can’t do. When Kiko [Ndr: Loureiro] he went away [Ndr: De Megadeth]everyone said, “Oh, there is a place for Demmel”, blah, blah, blah. And I, like, no way. And it’s not a Mustaine thing at all, because I get along very well with Dave. We have great mutual respect and he has always treated me very well. I’m just not capable of doing that job. There are solos that I physically couldn’t do with all those eyes judging me. The Pantera song is another song in which my name appeared (…). I couldn’t do that concert. There was no way I was doing that concert. They have the right guy for that job. There are too many eyes judging you.”

He “right type” to which Demmel refers is the iconic Zakk Wylde, guitar hero hardened in a thousand battles, whether in his main project Black Label Society or formerly accompanying Ozzy Osbourne. The former Machine Head does not question his talent or his potential to fill halls, variables that he drops that have led Anselmo and Brown to sign him. However, he does identify three other axes, possibly not as well known, that were They fit more into Darrell’s style.: “They ask me: “Who could play these songs?” And there are three guys who I think would nail it: Ola [Ndr: Englund, de The Haunted], Wes Hauch [Ndr: De Glass Casket y The Faceless] and Reece Scruggs, who now plays in Machine Head, but is from Havok. These three guys can play it, but does a stadium full of Pantera fans want to see them play that? Or do you want to see our reigning guitar Thor, who is Zakk Wylde, that torchbearer for this generation, as I see him? That’s what I would like to see.”

The diagnosis of Darrell seems quite right, seeing the great expectation that the return tour of Panther is generating in the metal community. For example, its position headliner in the reborn Barcelona Rock Festivalwhich will have Phil Anselmo, Rex Brown, Charlie Benante (Anthrax) and himself Zakk Wylde paying tribute to the Abbott brothers: Dimebag Darrell (1966-2004) and Vinnie Paul (1964-2018). Tickets are still on sale through the following link.

He pantera legacy continues to monopolize the thoughts of the rock and metal community. Recently, Dave Grohl dedicated a Foo Fighters anthem to Dimebag Darrellas well as Thomas Haake publicly acknowledged the influence of the whole from Arlington to Meshuggah. However, Pantera is not only past, but can also be present and future: its guitarist, Rex Brown, has claimed to be “fully open” to compose new songs.
