CURICÓ. cWith a fair of healthy food and sports, the Regional Ministerial Secretariat of Health, together with other government agencies, announced a campaign aimed at promoting healthy lifestyle habits. This initiative, which was presented in the Plaza de Armas of Curicó, is part of the high rates of obesity in the Chilean population, especially in children. Hence the need to generate changes in habits among people and, in this way, avoid diseases. “To combat obesity, it is necessary to work in a coordinated manner between various organizations,” said the Minister of Health, Gloria Icaza, who emphasized the importance of preventing this disease from an early age. Also within the framework of this fair, measurements of weight, height and muscle mass index were carried out on people who circulated in the area surrounding the square.

Meanwhile, the provincial director of Education, Rodrigo Castro, referred to the need to generate dietary changes and promote sports among the student population. “There are malnutrition rates that are quite worrying. For that reason, it is necessary to address the issue of nutrition and physical activity in schools,” he stated.

Also the person in charge of health promotion of the Curican municipality, Claudia Véliz, valued this type of initiative that seeks to generate changes in habits in the population. “For some time now we have been working in educational establishments, in order to instruct children and young people about the importance of generating behaviors that contribute to a good quality of life,” he said.
