20,000 euros for the AI image that fooled the Sony World Photography Awards jury last year

It was just an experiment. Or proof that contests and juries were not prepared for the era of images generated by Artificial Intelligence. This is how Boris Eldagsen explained it when in 2023 he won a Sony World Photography Awards that he later rejected after recognizing that what he had submitted was not a photograph.

What was not clear then is that this was also intended to be a good business. And the now famous image of Eldagsen is for sale for 20,000 euros in an art gallery in London.

The Electrician, the image created by Boris Eldagsen with AI

As we read in Petapixel, the image is part of the exhibition “Post-Photography: The Uncanny Valley” which brings together different creations generated with Artificial Intelligence. Eldagsen’s, yes, can boast of being the first to win a prestigious international photography contest.

Although it is true that Eldagsen’s image was presented in a category in which retouching and fusion of different photographs has always been allowed, the truth is that the German author’s deception caused great controversy.

As we reported from Photolari, which witnessed his award resignation speech live, the image was posted at the Sony World Photogrpahy Awards exhibition and appears in the catalog that is published each year with the winners.
