We have no recent evidence that refers to an exhibition starring a citizen of Real in Las Ventas, and for this reason, the painter from Almagro (Ciudad Real) Álvaro Ramos exhibits his work in the Welcome room of the most important bullring. of the world has great significance.

The exhibition will be inaugurated on May 14, although the formal presentation ceremony will take place two days later, Bullfighting Day, and can be visited in the mornings from 10:30 to 1:30 p.m., and in the afternoon with admission to the day’s celebration. , between 6:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. The exhibition will close on Sunday, May 19.

Ramos, an incipient bullfighter’s apprentice in his younger years, exchanged his cape and crutch for canvases and brushes, and has been advancing in a personal style that seeks insinuation or interpretation rather than realism that approaches painted photography.

For the exhibition Álvaro Ramos has prepared a total of 23 canvases, measuring 150 cm. high by 100 cm. wide, with Veronica bullfighting as the backbone, under the suggestive name “From José to Juan”, referring to the first painting of the series, with a winged Veronica by Joselito El Gallo –Gallito on the posters-, which has As an epilogue, another episode, of a different execution, played by the current Juan Ortega. As a curiosity, we will add that the day of the official presentation of the exhibition will mark 124 years since the death of Joselito in Talavera de la Reina.

In addition, the exhibition will be accompanied by the presentation of the book “From José to Juan. “A century of bullfighting the Veronica way.” In it, Gonzalo Bienvenida uses Ramos’ paintings to delve into the different executions and interpretations of 23 different bullfighters in relation to the fundamental throw of cape bullfighting, the veronica.

In these times of partisan suppression of institutional awards, and of comments as unfortunate as they are undocumented regarding the significance of Bullfighting, an exhibition like that of the citizen of Real, Álvaro Ramos, comes to put things in their place. Bullfighting, understandably controversial but unquestionably deep-rooted, is a cultural manifestation, and it inspires culture. Painting is one more example of them, to be added to other arts such as literature, dance, music, sculpture…

All of us who visit the Las Ventas bullring between May 14 and 19 have an appointment with bullfighting and art, both in the ring and in the Welcome Room.
