The Spanish Police recovered the fourth of five paintings by the Irish painter Francis Bacon that were stolen of an apartment in Madrid in 2015.
The 1989 painting, which shows a man’s head and is titled Study for portrait of José Capelo written on the back, it is valued at 5.4 million dollars, according to a police statement. He recovered after the arrest in February of two people suspected of receiving two of Bacon’s five works.
The value of all the paintings amounted to 25 million euros, according to reports at the time of the robbery. They were part of a collection owned by a close friend of Bacon, who reported the incident in July 2015.
Sixteen people, including the thieves, were arrested since the beginning of the case. The authorities They are still looking for the fifth painting and they focus their investigations on Spaniards linked to criminal gangs in Eastern Europe.
Bacon often visited Madrid, where he spent time studying the paintings of the Old Masters at the Prado Museum. He died in the Spanish capital in 1992, aged 82.
