Journalist Diego Hernández presents his book “Bob Ávila – The Number One”

Boca del Río, Veracruz.- Veracruz journalist Diego Hernández Tejeda presented his new book called “Bob Ávila – The Number One.”

This book tells the story of Roberto Francisco Ávila González, better known as “Beto Ávila”, a baseball player born in the city of Veracruz, also considered the first and only Mexican baseball player to become a batting champion in the Major Leagues.

Beto Ávila, to an Alvaradeña mother and Cosamaloapeño father, was born on April 2, 1924 and died on October 26, 2004.

The man from Veracruz played in the Mexican Baseball League for Cafeteros de Córdoba, Pericos de Puebla and Tigres de Mexico. He later traveled to Cuba to play with Azules de Almendares and there he was seen by the scouts of the Cleveland Indians of the Major Leagues, where He was a reference at second base on defense, while on offense he was key to the 1954 championship, being the first Latin American batting champion.

«Five (books) all about sports, all about football, it’s the first one I’ve done about baseball, let’s see if the baseball specialists don’t get angry because I’m not a baseball specialist, but I’m going to tell them that they didn’t throw themselves and then I I threw it, and it’s like my legacy for my son, I have a daughter in heaven who I dedicate everything I do to her, that’s why I do it to distract myself, it’s a hobby, it’s a passion, because in the province it’s hard for us work,” said Diego Hernández.

The book will be available in Veracruz bookstores and Book Fairs where it has been invited, at later dates it will be sold through the Amazon platform.
