Within the framework of the Book Fair, “The Sense of Order,” a story book – winner of the Julio Pardes 2023 National Story Book Award – is presented, promoted by the District Institute of the Arts, IDARTES and the Rocca Publishing Workshop. It corresponds to the first work of fiction by Alejandro Moreno, a Bogotá author who has been a collaborator of The viewer, some publications from the Semana group and Relatto, a portal specialized in chronicles. She currently resides in Buenos Aires where she is pursuing a Master’s Degree in Creative Writing from Untref.

The award jury was made up of Mery Yolanda Sánchez Bocanegra, Juan Camilo Rincón Bermúdez and José Zuleta Ortiz. The verdict was announced at the end of last year and constitutes one of the novelties presented during the FILBO that ends on May 2.

Each of the eight stories in “The Sense of Order” is an exploration of grief. In a certain way, the characters in these stories are born alongside the dead and are crossed by loss. Parents, children, grandchildren, friends or occasional witnesses grope to understand a world that has changed only for them. The only consolation, perhaps, is in the miracle of the word. The dead project a shadow and a destiny on the living, The sense of order is built under that shadow.

According to the writer Laura Ortiz Gómez, author of Sofoco: “The narratives in this book address the everyday, but they also look at the confusion and unfathomable mystery of death. There is in his writing an awareness of the materiality of language, an attentive work with the weight and texture of words.

“Thank you for teaching me the sense of order was the phrase they forced me to say at home every time they corrected me,” says Alejandro Moreno in relation to the title of his first book. The phrase survived the years, as if it had made a nest in my ear and in my emotional memory. Much later that phrase, a small stone of words, ended up being the foundation of a story and then a book. For several months I lived at night to write it, as if I were watching over it. Since then many things have happened: the book passed through several eyes, it knocked on doors that seemed to open and I went to live in another country while still waiting for the book to find its way. In November of last year I was lucky that a jury considered that I deserved the Julio Paredes National Short Story Book Award,” says the author of the winning book among 88 proposals participating in the call.
