The Cádiz Book Fair has equalled its historic record of visitors in its 39th edition, exceeding 20,000 visitors. The Cádiz reading festival, which was held from 28 June to 7 July at the Baluarte de Candelaria, was dedicated this year to the love affair between books and music, with a programme of more than a hundred activities coordinated by the journalist and writer Alejandro Luque.

The most popular events this year have been the opening speech by Benjamín Prado and Shuarma; the tribute to Joan Manuel Serrat led by his biographer, the Cadiz-born Luis García Gil; the talks by Julia Salander and the Ecuadorian writers Mónica Ojeda and Leonardo Valencia, as well as the posthumous tribute to the writer José Rasero, among other events.

Other events that had great support from the public were those led by Cherry Chic, producers Paco Loco and Alejo Stivel, actor and musician Alex O’Dogherty, essayist Remedios Zafra, novelist Manel Loureiro, or the meeting organized by the Tres Culturas Foundation with Lucía El Asri and Marta & Micó, as well as the closing ceremony by Pablo Carbonell and Cristina Fernández Cubas.

Special mention should be made of the morning routes scheduled this year, which have gained unexpected relevance compared to previous editions. Thus, the 60 people on Benito Olmo’s route, the 70 who accompanied Ricardo de Castro and Juan Vila, or the more than 150 who participated in Daniel Fopiani’s route, demonstrate the rise of this way of bringing books to all audiences.

It is also worth highlighting the use of the Fair this year as a showcase for various events, from the programme ‘Cádiz, city of books’ to the ‘Gaditanoir’ festival, as well as the presentation of the Café de Levante short story competition. Among the concerts, those with the largest audience were those of the Paula Bilá Trio, the tribute to Leonard Cohen by A Bunch of Lonesome Heroes and the flamenco closing by Jesús Corbacho.

The 39th Cádiz Book Fair is organized by the Municipal Culture Foundation of the Cádiz City Council and has the collaboration of the Andalusian Center for Letters of the Andalusian Government, the Provincial Council of Cádiz, the Publications Service of the UCA, the Vice-Rectorate for Culture, the University Extension Service of the UCA, the University Choir of Cádiz, the José Manuel Lara Foundation, the Carlos Edmundo de Ory Foundation, the Friends of Quiñones Association, the Fernando Quiñones Foundation, the Association of Readers, Cádiz Abolicionista, Babidi-bú, Libros de la Herida, Hojas de Hierba, Alikindoi Association, Daniel Heredia Agency, Tres Pies al Gato, Mayi Editores, Impresiones, El Musicario, Kaizen Editores, Urban Sketchers Bahía de Cádiz, Onda Cádiz TV, Canal Sur Cádiz, Radio Cádiz SER, Diario de Cádiz, Onda Cero Radio and the Three Cultures of the Mediterranean Foundation.
