Smurfit Kappa is the new great industrial “tenant” of Eastern Antioquia, where Grupo Familia, in Rionegro, or Pepsico, in Guarne, among other important companies, have a presence.

Precisely, Guarne became the home of Smurfit’s new corrugated cardboard packaging plant, the most modern of this company in the national territory, after an investment of more than US$50 million and construction that began in 2021.
The company described that it seeks to expand the capacity of the plant in Medellín, modernize its processes to meet the growing demand for sustainable packaging and maximize the experience of its customers.
For this reason, it made this new space available in which “you can experience innovation and packaging design methodologies with exclusive and cutting-edge tools.”
According to Tony Smurfit, CEO of the Smurfit Kappa Group, “Colombia is a market with great opportunities and this plant is focused on maximizing our customers’ experience through innovation and sustainability.”

In fact, the company valued that this plant was recently awarded as the best work with a steel structure in Colombia in the industrial category, within the framework of the IX International Congress of Steel Construction.
He also highlighted the economic contribution to Eastern Antioquia, taking into account that during its construction phase it generated around 500 direct jobs and It currently has a team of 170 employees.
It is worth mentioning that Smurfit Kappa is one of the leading firms in the manufacture of paper packaging in the world, and currently has operations in 22 countries in Europe, 13 countries in the Americas and 1 country in Africa.
Its presence in Guarne adds to that of Pepsico, which invested US$93 million between 2021 and 2023 in its plant, and from there 45% of the snack products it puts on the market are being produced.
Empacor and the Society of Builders of Antioquia (Socoda) are also present there, making the municipality a protagonist.
