The Lufthansa Group made a purchase of 40 Boeing 737 MAX aircraft

The Lufthansa Group’s fleet of short and medium-haul aircraft is dominated by the Airbus A320 family, however in December last year it placed an order for 40 Boeing 737 MAX 8 with an option to purchase another 60, at the moment the company does not has revealed how the aircraft will be distributed among the airlines.

Recently, Austrian began modernizing its long-haul fleet with Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft. In the short-haul segment, the traditional option to renew would be the A320neo family as the other airlines of the group are doing. In an interview with Austrian CEO Annette Mann for Aviation Week, she noted that the Boeing 737 MAX is being considered for addition to the fleet.

Currently, the airline has already received five Airbus A320neos as part of the renewal process of the short and medium haul fleet. They do not plan to incorporate more, pending the decision of the Lufthansa Group on the future of deliveries.

It is currently unknown whether Lufthansa and SWISS will introduce the 737 MAX to their fleets. In an interview with the CEO of Brussels Airlines, Dorothea von Boxberg by aeroTELEGRAPH, she stated that the Belgian airline will continue to operate pure Airbus aircraft.

In turn, Eurowings CEO Jens Bischof stated that there is the possibility of introducing a model other than the A320neo or A321neo.

Austrian has a significant number of aircraft to replace by 2035, its Airbus A320neo fleet is around 17 years old and the A321ceo fleet is 27 years old, so it is studying the option of continuing A320neo orders from the Lufthansa Group, but also There is the possibility of exercising orders for the company’s 737 MAX.

At the IATA General Assembly, the CEO of Austria told Aviation Week that he is considering increasing his order for 787 Dreamliners by one more, up to 12 units. The possibility of incorporating a 13th aircraft was ruled out due to the company’s weak profits.
