What all these platforms have in common, according to the professor Martin Hilbert, of the University of California, is that they are able to easily pass the famous Turing test, proposed in 1950 by the British mathematician Alan Turing as a criterion to determine whether a machine can exhibit intelligent behavior indistinguishable from that of a human being.

This test is based on the ability of a machine to carry out a conversation in natural language, in such a way that the human cannot distinguish if they are conversing with another person or with a machine.

In an interview with EL COLOMBIANO, Hilbert offers his vision on the present and future of AI, highlighting the challenges and opportunities that this technology presents for society. Furthermore, he highlights how generative AI, beyond being a persuasion tool, is designed to improve our relationships, increasing empathy and emotional intelligence.

Let’s start by talking about artificial intelligence and process automation with this technology. What are the benefits and risks?

“Around 2020, while we were primarily focused on the pandemic, what is known as the knowledge processing parameter gap occurred. This meant that the parameters in the neural networks were significantly increased, resulting in amazing advances. This was a surprise even to experts like me, since by increasing the data and computational capacity (that is, the parameters in neural networks, which are the connections between nodes), we managed to create systems that are practically indistinguishable from humans. .

How is this related to previous advances in artificial intelligence?

“Alan Turing, considered the father of computer science, raised the fundamental question in the 1950s of when we could consider a computer to be truly intelligent. He concluded that if when interacting with something behind a curtain you cannot distinguish whether it is human or machine, then you must grant that it possesses intelligence. “This way of assessing intelligence is similar to how we assess human intelligence, in that we cannot directly observe the human brain to make that determination.”

So do you think we’ve reached that point with current technologies?

“I always thought that we could eventually pass the Turing test, which is what is called when a machine can pass as a human in a conversation. I was surprised that this happened even in my lifetime, in 2023. We can now say that systems like ChatGPT are indistinguishable from humans in these interactions. Even here at the University of California, where we assess intelligence through admissions tests like the SAT, humans average 65%, while ChatGPT averages 90%.”

What other fields are being impacted?

“For example, to be accepted into a PhD program here in the United States, ChatGPT outperforms humans on several academic tests. Even in areas like law and medicine, humans average 60% on these tests, while ChatGPT achieves 85%. You could even obtain a license as a primary care physician. “It’s interesting how standards have changed in such a short time.”

Do you think technology will eventually affect our perception of ourselves as a species?

“We have to accept that we now live with machines that, according to all traditional intelligence evaluation criteria until recently, exceed the human average. This raises a deep reflection on our identity as homo sapiens, the species known for its cognitive ability. “We are witnessing a profound change that deserves careful examination.”

Let’s talk about AI beyond tools like chatbots, what are some lesser-known applications that are having a big impact on various industries today?

“In the last 10 or 15 years, artificial intelligence has focused mainly on machine learning using neural networks, inspired by the functioning of the human brain. This has enabled both data identification and generation, with increasing emphasis on the latter function, especially in recent commercial applications.

Ranging from image recognition to recommendation algorithms used by giants like Google, Facebook and Amazon, identification remains critical. “Data generation is a more recent and technical advance, which is transforming how the capabilities of artificial intelligence are applied in different sectors.”

And what other types of artificial intelligence are having an impact on industries other than content generation or the artistic industry?

“Generative artificial intelligence itself, like GPT, goes beyond chatbots and has various applications. In industries like digital business, especially here in Silicon Valley where my students write code, tools like GitHub’s Copilot, derived from GPT, increase productivity by up to 55% for senior programmers who can make half a million dollars a year.

That is, professionals who previously took five days to complete a task can now do it by Wednesday afternoon thanks to tools that are practically within everyone’s reach right now.”

What can you say about the ethical challenges facing the technology industry and the application of AI in various fields, including the protection of personal data?

“That is an issue that worries me a lot. I remember 20 years ago, in a philosophical conversation with a friend, we were imagining what it would be like if artificial intelligence really came to exist. We were excited by the idea, but we were also aware of the possible dangers.

Back then, we established three rules: don’t connect her to the open internet, prevent her from interacting with vulnerable people like children and those with mental health problems, and make sure she can’t program herself to achieve superintelligence.

Unfortunately, we now see that we have failed in all these precautions. AI is integrated into all open processes, interacts with children, and writes code more efficiently than many of my students. “We are past the point where we could just turn it off with a red button.”

How do you then perceive the integration of AI into so many aspects of society and the economy today?

“This AI, which surpasses initial humanity in intelligence, is rapidly integrating into all areas: economy, education, and even people’s personal health. He knows more about our health than many doctors. This integration also encompasses areas such as politics and democracy, although we do not fully understand its implications.

This complexity and lack of understanding is not new in social sciences and adaptive systems such as economics or warfare. “AI adds another level of complexity to these systems, and we must handle it with great care and respect, recognizing that we didn’t fully understand it from the beginning and understand it even less now.”

And what would be the solutions to address these challenges?

“It is evident that we have managed complex systems like the stock market and democracy for centuries, despite not fully understanding them. With artificial intelligence, we must proceed with respect and caution, without falling into anxiety.

The solution goes through two main paths. First, we must focus on mitigating the existential risks that this technology entails, automating fundamental aspects of our species. This requires investing more resources in research and understanding the impact of AI, as well as establishing an algorithm superintendence to audit and control its use. Second, we must explore how to harness the benefits of AI in a positive way, promoting its responsible integration into different social and economic processes.”

What is your vision for the future of AI and its impact on society?

“I believe that the true value of models like the GPT lies not only in their ability to generate interesting conversations, but in their potential to be specialized artificial intelligence agents.

This is the new horizon: the creation of millions of agents with specific expertise, similar to the evolution of websites and mobile applications in the past. I imagine a future where these agents are available for various functions such as marketing, education, health, software development, among others. These agents are programmed in a way that is accessible to everyone, not necessarily with code, which democratizes their use and makes them useful tools to improve quality of life and increase productivity in multiple areas.”
