VISIT TO GUATEMALA
Queen Letizia will travel to Guatemala next June
Doña Letizia has been on a cooperation trip every year for almost a decade
Queen Letizia puts on her aid vest again and prepares for a new trip, scheduled for the month of June. King Felipe’s wife will visit Guatemala at the beginning of the month, within the framework of the activities in which she collaborates with the Spanish Agency for Development Cooperation (AECID). It is usual for Queen Letizia to make one cooperation trip a year, since she took over from Queen Sofía in 2015.
The destinations are sandwiched between the African continent and the Latin American area, however, although last year he was in Colombia, this year he will not travel to Africa, but will repeat in South America. As confirmed, the current situation in the Sahel has not allowed the trip to take place normally, so a destination in Latin America has been chosen.
According to several media outlets, Queen Letizia will travel to Guatemala, a destination that, in this specific year, has special relevance. This June marks 10 years since the proclamation of Felipe VI as head of State and Guatemala was the last destination that Queen Sofia visited on a cooperation trip, in the month of March 2014. For the Queen Letiziawill be his first trip of this nature to the country and the agenda will focus on issues such as improving access to basic water and sanitation services, child malnutrition or the fight against violence against women.
Queen Letizia’s hosts on this trip will be President Bernardo Arévalo and his wife, Lucrecia Hairstylewith whom he already had the opportunity to meet last January, when they made an official trip to our country and the Kings honored them with a lunch at the Royal Palace.
Queen Letizia’s cooperation trips
It was in 2015, a few months after the proclamation of Felipe VI as head of state, when Queen Letizia carried out her first cooperation trip, to Honduras and El Salvador. In 2017 she traveled to Senegal, on the African continent and, in 2018, she returned to Latin America, to the Dominican Republic and Haiti. In 2019, before the pandemic broke out, King Philip’s wife returned to Africa, to Mozambique.
Despite the health emergency due to the coronavirus pandemic, in 2020 he traveled to Honduras again to visit areas devastated by the climate situation and to bring humanitarian aid. There we saw her for the first time in the ‘cooperator uniform’, with the red vest. In 2021 she moved to Paraguay and in 2022 it was her turn to Mauritania. The last of her cooperation trips, last year, was Colombia, so, on this occasion, she visited Africa, but finally, due to the situation on the continent, she opted for Guatemala.
