(CNN) — Celine Dion shared details about how difficult her life has become because she suffers from stiff person syndrome.

In an excerpt from an interview with NBC’s Hoda Kotb, the acclaimed singer revealed that when she tries to sing it’s “like someone is strangling you.”

“It’s like someone is pushing your larynx here,” Dion told the “Today” co-host as the singer pushed her throat to demonstrate what she meant.

Spasms can attack different parts of your body, such as your abdomen, spine, and ribs.
“I’ve broken my ribs before, because sometimes, when it’s really bad, it can also break some ribs,” the Grammy winner explained.

The disorder is “a rare, progressive syndrome that affects the nervous system, specifically the brain and spinal cord,” according to the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke.

Last year, Dion announced that she had canceled her Courage World Tour, and a source close to her then told CNN that she “probably won’t tour again.”

Doctors detected something in Dion’s blood that helps explain why she contracted the rare neurological disorder, according to the NBC report, and she is undergoing treatment to try to resume more activities.

That’s also the focus of an upcoming documentary, “I Am: Celine Dion,” premiering on Prime Video on June 25.
