To everyone’s surprise, Grand Duke of Luxembourg announced this Sunday the transfer of his functions to his eldest son, the Hereditary Grand Duke William, starting next October. The news coincided with Luxembourg’s National Day, which the grand ducal family has been celebrating all this weekend with several public appearances.

“I want to inform you that I have decided to appoint Prince William as lieutenant representative for the month of October,” said Grand Duke Henry during a speech given as part of the celebrations. “With all my love and trust, and with all my heart, I wish you a happy government. Let us look to the future with optimism, and with the certainty that only together we can achieve great things. Long live Luxembourg and long live Europe!”

In a separate statement, the grand ducal house has clarified that Grand Duke Henry has not abdicated in favor of his son, and that he will retain his title. “Instead, [Enrique] He will be represented by his son, Hereditary Grand Duke William. The Grand Duke may delegate his powers temporarily or permanently to a lieutenant-representative. Before exercising his powers, this lieutenant-representative [Guillermo] will take an oath to defend the Constitution.”

However, in Luxembourg this type of appointment is nothing more than the previous step to the abdication of the grand duke. Thus, in 1998 Enrique became lieutenant-representative of his father, Grand Duke Juan, who only two years later, upon turning 79 in 200, decided to abdicate in favor of his son, something that everyone assumes will be repeated. in the next years.

Prince William is 42 years old and married to the Princess Stephaniewith whom she has two small children: Prince Charles and Prince François, who, at 3 and 1 years old respectively, occupy second and third place in the line of succession to the throne of Luxembourg.
