The head of the Endocrinology and Nutrition Service at the Virgen Macarena Hospital in Seville, María Asunción Martínez Broccahas been distinguished with the 21st Century National Medicine Award in the specialty of Endocrinology. The award has highlighted her professional and academic career “which has led her to become national and international reference professional in diabetes care and research.

In addition to his healthcare work, Martínez Brocca has developed “an important role” in shaping public health policies as responsible, since 2015, for the Comprehensive Diabetes Plan of Andalusia. Between the milestones achieved, is the recognition of the Early Screening Program for Diabetic Retinopathy of the Public Health System of Andalusia as Best Practice by the Ministry of Health (2017), according to the hospital center in a press release.

In addition, the doctor has been recognized by the World Health Organization (2018) and the European Commission (2022), as well as the implementation of technologies applied to diabetes for people with Type 1 and type 2 diabetes within the framework of the SSPA. At the national level, it is part of the Institutional Committee of the National Diabetes Strategy and of Committee of Experts of the Operative Plan for Diabetic Retinopathy of the National Health System. From 2017holds the position of head of the Endocrinology and Nutrition service at the Virgen Macarena University Hospital.

His experience and leadership are also reflected in his participation as coordinator of the working group of Technologies Applied to Diabetess (2015-2018) and, currently, from the Health Management group of the Spanish Diabetes Society. Since 2018, she has combined her clinical, research and management work with teaching, as associate professor of the Department of Medicine of the University of Seville.

Martínez Brocca is the author of numerous scientific works in high-impact magazines and participates in multiple projects in national and European competitive calls. As those responsible for these awards highlight, “her commitment to research, teaching and clinical care make her an example for the medical and scientific community in our country.”
