The Vice-Rector for Research of the Universidad de los Andes, through its Innovation Directorate, awarded the second call for BiCI Funds -Bidirectional Commitment in Innovation- in its modality aimed at researchers.

In this new call, those who were awarded the funds were the researchers Matías Petersen, María Consuelo San Martín, María Francisca Valenzuela from the Faculty of Social Sciences; Veronica Vidal from the Faculty of Medicine and Ximena Farfán from the Faculty of Nursing and Obstetrics.

Projects

The Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences, Matías Petersen, presented the project “Shared Voices: Weaving the past and future of the Mutual Societies of Chile.” The novelty of this commitment lies in the development of a platform that allows the rescue and participatory preservation of the oral and documentary heritage of these organizations, facilitating the contribution of users, through the uploading of documents, oral testimonies and digital memories. This type of experience is new in Chile, but is inspired by a similar experience being developed by the British Library.

For her part, the researcher from the Faculty of Social Sciences, María Consuelo San Martín, was awarded the funds with the proposal “A Path to Inclusion: Addressing the Mental Needs of People with Intellectual Disabilities”, a project that seeks to demonstrate the difficulties that this community faces in accessing mental health, as well as the knowledge and practices of mental health professionals with this community. The results of this project will contribute to the future training of mental health professionals and the development of accessible and adapted services for people with intellectual disabilities.

The director of the Reading Research and Innovation Center, CIIL, M. Francisca Valenzuela, presented the “Solidarity Reading Clinic” project, which is inspired by international initiatives of “reading clinics” in which teachers and education students carry out Practical experiences diagnosing, planning and tutoring real students, within university campuses. These Clinics have been shown to significantly improve students’ reading skills. This project will pilot a reading clinic in the communities of Las Condes and San Bernardo, with the participation of Master’s in Psychopedagogy students in order to evaluate the technical and financial feasibility of its installation.

Meanwhile, the researcher from the Faculty of Medicine, Verónica Vidal, was awarded the funds with the project “Neurodiversity Awareness Program for School Communities”, a proposal that seeks to develop and pilot in an educational establishment, an awareness program and adaptation of educational environments for neurodiversity, in order to feed it back, package it and scale it to new educational establishments.

The researcher from the Faculty of Nursing and Midwifery, Ximena Farfán, presented the proposal “Care Manual: guidance and support for family members or voluntary caregivers of people at the end of life”, a project that seeks to develop a manual and a care program. formal training for volunteer caregivers of dependent people, collaboratively with caregivers and palliative care professionals.

The objective of this contest is to support applied research projects committed to society (R&Dc), that is, that address problems or opportunities close to society and that are developed with the participation of the groups or territories involved; seeking to increase the possibilities of effectively impacting end users with the results obtained.
