World Family Doctor Day

On May 19 We pay a well-deserved tribute to those specialists in Family and Community Medicine who provide comprehensive medical assistance to people. We celebrate World Family Doctor Day.

In 2010 the World Organization of Family Doctors (WONCA) proposed the creation of this day, to highlight the importance and contribution of family doctors in health systems worldwide.

What is a family doctor?

The family doctor is a specialist who offers personal, primary and comprehensive medical care to individuals and families who are part of a community. Family medicine is a medical specialty, with scientific training that lasts 3 years.

Among its main functions the following stand out:

Provide comprehensive medical care to the patient, according to their age profile, sex, pathology or risk group, which includes addressing biological, psychological, work, family and social aspects of the individual. Transmit information related to health promotion, early diagnosis and prevention of diseases, treatments, rehabilitation and palliative care. Assistance and care for patients in Health Centers, in homes and in the community. Guidance to people about the opportunity, use and access to levels of care within of the health system, according to their care needs.

WONCA: an international organization

The World Organization of Family Doctorscalled in English World Organization of National Colleges, Academies and Academic Associations of General Practitioners/Family Physicians (WONCA)is an international organization affiliated with the World Health Organization (WHO), which brings together universities, academies and associations interested in the practice of general or family medicine.

It was founded in 1972 and currently has 120 organizations from 99 countries, representing more than 500,000 family doctors around the world. Its main mission is to improve the quality of life of the population, through the application of standards of care in general and family medicine.

It also encourages and supports the development of academic organizations of general and family practitioners, as well as educational research in health and healthcare.

Year 2023: Family doctors, the heart of medical care

Annually, the World Organization of Family Doctors (WONCA) organize a campaign to celebrate the World Family Doctor Day.

For 2023, the theme is “Family doctors, the heart of medical care”. And that’s because primary care doctors have a long-term relationship with patients. Furthermore, they not only take into account physical well-being but also emotional, social and psychological well-being. And they coordinate medical care with specialists.

Year 2022: Family doctors: always there to care!

For 2022, the central theme was: “Family doctors: always there to care”. It refers to three fundamental aspects of the work of family doctors:

Always: Consistency and continuity is a fundamental feature of their work and is present at all stages of patients’ lives.There: They are always where they are needed, in health centers, in neighborhoods, in communities, close to patients.Look after: It is their job, they take care of people, as a privilege and as a responsibility.

Year 2021: building the future with family doctors

For the year 2021 the motto or central theme was “Building the future with Family Doctors!”in accordance with the Year of Health and Care Workers 2021, declared by the World Health Organization (WHO) based on four fundamental pillars, as a key element to overcome the challenges towards a better future:
