New medical operation carried out home visits to geriatric patients in Calama – Mining Report

More than 25 people with different pathologies were controlled by geriatric doctors and kinesiologists in a new medical operation promoted by Codelco and the Acrux Foundation.

Coverage of more than 25 home visits, 14 kinesiological services and a training day on comprehensive geriatric assessment tools and evaluation of older patients, aimed at health teams that regularly care for people hospitalized in their homes, was the scope that the new medical operation had in Calama powered by Codelco and Acrux Foundation within the framework of the Together for your Health Stage 2 agreement, which has the support of COMDES Calama and the Antofagasta Health Service.

In relation to the training, the geriatric doctor from the Acrux Foundation, Mónica Avilés, stated that “the idea was to provide the necessary tools so that the usual equipment that make home visits, manage to internalize this assessment and can discharge or transfer patients to other medical units.”

One of the home visits was led by the foundation’s pediatrician, Felipe Monsalve, who argued that “the purpose of going to the homes was to carry out psycho-educational management training, review medications and provide indications for rehabilitation therapies in patients with gait disorders. It was a time when the actual diagnosis and the lifestyle change needed were explained simply to patients and their families.”

“He taught me a lot, including how to communicate with patients”

In each care, the doctor was accompanied by two kinesiologists, who also developed care and diagnostic practices for future rehabilitation. “It was a rich experience, because although we are governed by the technical standards of the Ministry of Health, In this operation with Acrux doctors, it allowed us to open another vision. “He taught me a lot, even in the way of communicating with patients,” said Estefany Romero, rehabilitation kinesiologist at COMDES Salud’s Comprehensive Home Care Program.

The patients, their families and responsible caregivers expressed their gratitude for the medical control and advice to achieve rehabilitation and a better quality of life, as is the case of Mirza Cortés, beneficiary of the operation, who statedor: “I suffer a lot from one leg and today the doctor and the kinesiologists did gymnastics for me and helped me a lot. I have to do everything they told me, do a little exercise and take care of myself at meals.”

For her part, María Fernanda Romero, director(s) of Community Affairs of Codelco’s Northern Operations, indicated that “This initiative aims to contribute to reducing waiting lists and providing medical care to those who cannot go to the healthcare center. Likewise, we are supporting local services, training specialists in the area for better health care.”

Medical operation in Tocopilla

The medical operation was also deployed in Tocopilla, where more than a thousand services were performed for patients at the local hospital and 20 surgeries, with the presence of specialists in cardiology, dermatology, gynecology, radiology, otorhinolaryngology, geriatrics, internal medicine, gastroenterology and ophthalmology. In addition, the operation moved its own equipment to provide care, examinations and procedures.

It should be remembered that this agreement had its first stage between 2022 and 2023, a period in which More than 7 thousand medical benefits were delivered, including consultations, exams, procedures and surgeries, to patients on the waiting list in the Antofagasta Region. This alliance, led by Codelco and Fundación Acrux, will allow new medical operations in the remainder of the year, with the aim of continuing to bring decisive and quality health to those who need it most.
