On the night of Friday, June 14, it was learned that Camilo Cabrera Polanía, the founder of the Cardioinfantil Foundation (LaCardio), whose main headquarters is located in the north of Bogotá, died at the age of 91.

Dr. Cabrera Polanía, in addition to having headed the Foundation, was also an honorary member of the Superior Council and a notable doctor who stood out in cardiovascular medicine.

Originally from Huila, Cabrera did his undergraduate studies at the National University of Colombia and subsequently specialized in cardiovascular surgery at the Texas Medical Center from Houston, United States.

After returning to Colombia in the 1970s, he joined forces, together with his brother Reinaldo Cabrera, to lay the first foundations of LaCardio, which today has become a leading health center in the world of Colombian health.

“The desire to help children began at Misericordia Hospital. There, with my brother Reinaldo, we felt the affection for the children of all the people at the hospital and especially the Barberi family. But there we also saw the great misery of many children and their enormous need to survive. It was at that time the only truly charitable hospital there was. There was the Children’s Hospital, very good, but with better income. In addition, the poor child population of the city and the country in general came to La Misericordia. Seeing this difficulty, especially in the cardiac part, caught our attention and worried us a lot. Yes, naturally, there were many cardiologists for adults,” were the words with which Cabrera recalled his beginnings in pediatric cardiovascular surgery, according to the information compiled by LaCardio on his website.

“Our hearts are in mourning. With deep sadness, we inform you that Doctor Camilo Cabrera Polanía, founder, emeritus director and member of the Superior Council as well as a teacher, guide and pioneer of cardiovascular surgery in Colombia, has died at the age of 91,” he noted on his networks. LaCardio Social.

“We remember with gratitude his invaluable legacy and passion for medicine, he has left an indelible mark on our institution and in the hearts of thousands of Colombians. We deeply appreciate the support and solidarity,” he noted on his X account.

Several entities and people from the Colombian health world also mourned the death of Dr. Cabrera. The Bogotá Health Secretariat, for example, tweeted the following message: “We regret the loss of Doctor Camilo Cabrera Polanía, founder, director emeritus and member of the board of directors of the Cardioinfantil Foundation. To his family and his work team we express our sincere condolences.”

“The Rosarista Community regrets the death of Camilo Cabrera Polanía. Our most sincere condolences to family and friends,” reads the X account from the Universidad del Rosario.
