An album that was born from an injustice

Ten days before the release of Cowboy Carterthe singer confessed that this project was born from a racist situation that she experienced when, as a black woman, she wanted to make country music.

“This album has been over five years in the making. It was born out of an experience I had years ago where I didn’t feel welcome… and it was very clear that I wasn’t. But, because of that experience, I got more into the story.” of country music and studied our rich musical archive. It feels good to see how Music can unite so many people around the world.while also amplifying the voices of some of the people who have dedicated much of their lives to educating our musical history,” he confessed.

“The criticism I faced when I entered this genre They forced me to push beyond the limitations that were placed on me. “Act II is the result of challenging myself, and taking my time to bend and blend genres together to create this body of work,” she added.

In the first track of the album, American Requiem, the singer refers to this experience in the following fragment:

“Used to say I spoke too country

then the rejection came,

said I wasn’t country enough

Said I wouldn’t saddle up, but

If that ain’t country tell me what it is.”

This whole fight ended up making Beyoncé become the first black woman with the number one single on the Hot Country Songs chart with Texas Hold ‘Em.
