Luis A. Miranda explains how to improve the lives of Latinos in the US.

San Juan (EFE).- Puerto Rican activist and politician Luis A. Miranda assured EFE that in his autobiography ‘Incansable’, which he presented this Wednesday, he aims to explain how politics can “change the social and economic conditions” of the Latino community of the United States.

With this book, which will be launched on May 7, the father of the well-known actor, composer and playwright Lin-Manuel Miranda also wants future generations to have better living conditions.

Miranda, who was accompanied at the presentation of the book at the Museum of Art of Puerto Rico by his son Lin-Manuel, highlighted “the impact of people who paved the way” to create a Latino community “with political power” in the United States.

For his part, Lin Manuel highlighted the work his family did for this, especially his father.

In ‘Incansable’, the author highlights the importance of the political strategy for the United States of campaigning in English and Spanish since the number of Latino and black voters is on the rise and, according to Miranda, white voters will be in 2040 60%.

He also mentions the great challenge of misinformation and told EFE that it is necessary to “continuously be vigilant” about the information that is disseminated in traditional media and on social networks.

“Latinos are more open to new ideas,” Miranda said regarding the struggle of the LGTBIQ+ community, climate change and migration, among others.

Miranda’s, a lifetime of political struggle

Originally from the Puerto Rican municipality of Vega Alta, Miranda emigrated in the 1970s, at the age of 19, to New York after being accepted into the Clinical Psychology doctoral program at New York University.

There, he played a crucial role in the fast-paced and competitive political atmosphere, focusing his work on getting political candidates to place importance on engaging with the Latino and Black communities.

Regarding the colonial status of Puerto Rico, a Free Associated State of the United States, the activist and philanthropist indicated that the future will be decided by Puerto Ricans.

“I don’t know if Puerto Rico is going to be independent or not. It seems to me that being part of the sovereign nations of the world is important for the archipelago and important for how the world sees us and for the development of Puerto Rico,” she asserted.

In 1990, he founded the Hispanic Federation, thus becoming one of the main voices in New York City, managing to channel more support towards Latino non-profit organizations.
