Medellín, the city that was the scene of the tragic death of Carlos Gardel, the legendary tango singer and composer, continues to celebrate the legacy of the “zorzal criollo” after 89 years since the Argentine singer-songwriter’s fatal plane crash in the capital of Antioquia on June 24, 1935.

Gardel, born in 1890, originally from Buenos Aires, Argentina, is recognized as one of the most influential figures of tango.

The tragic accident occurred when the plane in which Gardel, 44, was traveling, collided with another aircraft. at the Olaya Herrera airport in Medellín.

Over the decades, the performer has been immortalized through countless tributes, statues and festivals dedicated to his memory.

In Medellinthis Monday, June 24 on Manrique 45, where Gardel’s statue is located, a tribute will be held at 3:00 p.m. m within the framework of the XVIII Medellín International Tango Festival, held every year this month, which began this Sunday, June 23.

ANDn Buenos Aires, the Abasto neighborhoodwhere he spent much of his youth, has become a sanctuary for tango followers, with the Carlos Gardel House Museum as one of the most visited points.

89 years after his departure, the capital of Antioquia celebrates the festival with more than 1,000 artists with free admission. “We are waiting for you to enjoy the passion of tango because the festival is lived and enjoyed in the city. We want you to accompany us on each of the stages, to know tango and to enjoy it as much as we do. Medellín is a tango city and, for this reason, we open the doors to welcome the world. “Musicians, dancers and singers wait for our festival every year,” said the artistic coordinator of the International Tango Festival, Viviana Jaramillo.

Among the events this Monday is the class with the bandoneonist Víctor Lavallén, at 10:00 am in the Beethoven Room of the Palace of Fine Arts and the Gala Night, which will take place starting at 7:30 pm in the Metropolitan Theater. The different activities that the festival has are scheduled until June 30.
