Activos Mineros SAC (Amsac) reported on the progress of its intervention in two of the 71 components of the Florencia Tucari mining unit, property of the Aruntani company, located in the Carumas district, Moquegua region, within the framework of the work table promoted by the Presidency of the Council of Ministers (PCM) in the face of the pollution problem of the Coralaque River.
He Amsac Operations Manager, Ysmael Ormeño, detailed the mitigation actions carried out to datewhich have included a wide spectrum of tasks: from inventorying and evaluating existing structures, to carrying out maintenance, adaptation and replacement of canals in about 15 kilometers, in order to ensure an adequate flow of water.
“The work we have been carrying out is part of the agreement signed with the Ministry of Energy and Mines (Minem), and in addition to the actions mentioned above, we have carried out the creation of contingency pools to counteract the impacts of intense rains on the area,” he stressed.
The president of the Council of Ministers, Alberto Otárola, participated in the multisectoral meeting; the Minister of Energy and Mines, Oscar Vera; the Minister of the Environment, Albina Ruiz; the Vice Minister of Territorial Governance, Paul Caiguaray; the regional governor of Moquegua, Gilia Gutiérrez; Congressman Víctor Cutipa; among others.
In April 2018, the Environmental Assessment and Supervision Agency (OEFA) ordered the Aruntani SAC mining company to begin the final closure of the waste rock deposit and the pit, of the Florencia-Tucari mining unit.
The entity specified that it ordered Aruntani SAC to prioritize the treatment of acidic waters of said components until the Maximum Permissible Limits (LMP) are met, in the Florencia–Tucari mining unit.
He maintained that the objective of the imposed measure is to avoid contamination of the Margaritani and Apostoloni streams, tributaries of the Coralaque River.
During supervision actions, the OEFA identified acid effluents coming from the waste rock deposit and the pit of said unit, which exceeded the LMP and flowed towards the Margaritani and Apostoloni streams. Likewise, operational deficiencies were detected in the acid water treatment system of the waste rock deposit.
