The Argentine Observatory for Education released a report in which it was determined that 34% of San Juan students who reach the 6th grade of primary school have a good level of knowledge in the subjects Language and Mathematics, that is, There are 66% who have problems in both subjects. This is based on the data from the School Result Index (IRE) of students, taking into account the data from the Annual Survey and the 2023 Learn tests, this implies that they are children who entered primary school in 2018.
Only 45% of students who enter first grade reach sixth grade in the expected time and with satisfactory knowledge of Language and Mathematics. The data comes from the report “Primary School Results Index: Evolution and analysis by department”, from the Observatory of Argentinos for Education, authored by Sandra Ziegler (Flacso), Eugenia Orlicki and Leyre Sáenz Guillén (Observatorio de Argentinos por la Educación). Education).
According to the analysis of these specialists, the IRE has a correlation with the socioeconomic level of the students. This determined that rich areas obtained a better IRE index: CABA (61%), Córdoba (57%), Tierra del Fuego (48%) and La Pampa (48%). At the other extreme are San Juan, Santiago del Estero and Catamarca, which reached 34% and Chaco, which was at the lowest with 30%. For the first time, this study determined data in the departments and defined that in San Juan, the department that obtained the lowest IRE was Rawson with 29%.
With these values, it can be said that although 34% of San Juan students present a good level, the remaining 66% do not meet the necessary knowledge to complete a quality education.
In the Cuyo region, the highest IRE are in Junín (56%) in San Luis; Mendoza capital (53%), General Alvear (52%), La Paz (51%) and Santa Rosa (49%) in Mendoza; and in San Juan Capital (49%). The lowest IRE are in Las Heras (28%) and Tunuyán (30%) of Mendoza.
Finishing on time
Another factor that the study analyzed is whether the students finished their studies in the estimated time. The national average is 94% of students who enter first grade reach sixth grade on time. Likewise, they clarified that there are significant inequalities between provinces and departments throughout the country.
In some provinces, practically all students who enter first grade reach sixth grade in the expected time, without repeating or dropping out: the percentage rises to more than 99% in Córdoba, Santa Cruz, La Pampa, Chubut, Río Negro and Jujuy . At the national level, 22 of the 24 provinces have improved this indicator since 2011: the only exceptions are Chaco and Tierra del Fuego.
Only Misiones, Santiago del Estero, San Juan and Corrientes have less than 90% of students who reach sixth grade on time, according to data from the 2018-2023 cohort. These four provinces have had significant increases between 2016 and 2023: Corrientes went from 65% to 82%, Misiones from 74% to 86%, Santiago del Estero from 74% to 86% and San Juan from 80% to 84%.
