After several weeks of internal deliberationthe Government decided that Cali will host the COP16 Climate Change and Biodiversity Summitwhich will take place between October and November 2024.

The announcement was made by President Gustavo Petro from the Casa de Nariño, who reviewed the deliberation that his Government had to reach the final decision to choose Calias the headquarters of the summit.

“Cali has just suffered a social outbreak that was like the entire country, but much more intense,” said Gustavo Petro, indicating another of the motivations that led to choosing the capital of Valle del Cauca.

The president added that “The world in the city of Cali wants a social pact to be sealed. The open wounds, which have not completely healed, heal,” the president said.

In that sense, President Gustavo Petro pointed out that Cali is the center of the biodiversity of the Colombian Pacific and therefore, it deserves to be the center of arrival for delegations from around the world that will meet to talk about climate change and protection of life.

For her part, the Minister of the Environment, Susana Muhamad, highlighted that COP16 is “the most important international negotiation event that the country has held in its history.”

The official noted that “we are going to have the honor of holding the presidency of the biodiversity COP for two years. This means that Colombia will be the articulator of the international negotiation on biodiversity, for decisions as important as meeting the goals of the CUNMIS-Montreal framework,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Minister of Commerce, Industry and Tourism, Germán Umaña, He also spoke in the statement from the Casa de Nariño and He described the fact that Colombia is hosting this summit as a “privilege.”

“For us it is essential to make the objectives of multilateralism coherent, both in biodiversity and in the sustainable development objectives, and the COP with all investment, trade and services issues,” said Umaña.

He concluded that “it is not possible that there should not be this joint action to defend the planet, climate change, against the sustainable development goals. “Colombia is the country of beauty.”
