There is concern among recycler organizations in Bucaramanga and the metropolitan area about the future for that sector of the local economy.

One of the concerns of recyclers is knowing what will happen to the El Carrasco landfill, in addition to future projects or technologies that will be used for waste management in the different municipalities that have the current landfill.

The recyclers’ organizations indicated that they have learned of advance meetings between the municipal administrations and the Bucaramanga Cleaning Company, Emab, so they hope to know what the conclusions of those meetings are.

“In these meetings, the recycling union has not been given participation, although I trust that at some point we will be given participation. I think it is convenient to hear first-hand what the future of the solid waste of the municipalities that dispose of in El Carrasco is, but above all all of which is the operational and social future of our union,” says the letter signed by Gonzalo Mejía, spokesperson for the recyclers’ organizations in the capital of Santander.

When consulted, the manager of the Bucaramanga Cleaning Company, Emab, Helber Panqueva, responded that the meetings that have been held with the different mayors are due to part of the response to the judicial decision that ordered the closure of the landfill.

“We work in coordination with them (recyclers’ organizations), but support of any kind comes from the administrations with their different plans and projects,” said Panqueva, who added that they will be the development plans of each administration and the Management Plans. Integral Solid Waste, or Pgirs, in which the perspectives for these groups in the area are drawn.

The official confirmed that he will participate in the meeting with spokespersons for these cooperatives in the metropolitan area. The meeting will take place this Tuesday, April 2, at the El Carrasco landfill.
