Men’s Tennis Falls To UNCW In CAA Championship Match

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – The Elon University men’s tennis team fought hard but fell 4-1 to No. 1 seeded and nationally ranked UNCW in the CAA championship match Sunday.


The Phoenix completes its season with a 16-8 record. This was Elon’s third straight appearance in the CAA title match. UNCW, who entered the match ranked No. 52 in the ITA rankings, improved to 17-5 with the victory. This was the fourth straight CAA championship for the Seahawks, who will continue their season as the conference’s automatic bid in the NCAA Tournament.


  • The Seahawks took the double point with wins at the Nos. 1 and 2 spots.
  • Oskar Antinheimo and Jack Curtis were the first to finish in doubles, winning 6-2 at the No. 3 position. The underclassmen finished the season with a team-best 15 victories together, all at the No. 3 spot.
  • This was the third straight season UNCW has taken the doubles point against Elon in the CAA championship match.
  • Elon tied the match at 1-1 courtesy of a 6-3, 6-0 triumph by Dylan Heap on Court 6. Heap reached double-digit wins on the season with the result, closing his college tennis career with a victory.
  • The Seahawks won matches on Courts 3 and 5 to move ahead 3-1.
  • UNCW then clinched the title with a win at the No. 1 spot. The Seahawks were also a game away from winning on Court 4.
  • The match was the final of head coach Michael Leonard‘s career. In his 20 seasons with the Phoenix, Leonard posted 300 victories and led the program to three NCAA Tournament appearances.
