With the objective of contributing to the reserves of the Blood Bank of the San Pablo de Coquimbo Hospital, on Wednesday, April 17, the first Blood Donation Campaign of the year 2024 was held at the Guayacán UCN Campus, organized by the School of Self-Care of the Faculty of Medicine of the Universidad Católica del Norte and the San Pablo Hospital (HSP) of Coquimbo.

The event also sought to raise awareness in the community about the importance of voluntary donation, an act of solidarity that allows for a medical response to the community, contributing to saving lives. Each blood donation can save up to three lives, with blood being an important input in operations, treatment of diseases and emergencies.

From the Faculty of Medicine, they described the campaign as successful, after collecting 37 effective donations from students, academic support staff and UCN teachers. This was stated by Rodrigo Carvajal Asúa, head of the Blood Bank of the Coquimbo Hospital, who explained that, “we attended to more than 30 donations, it is a no less number that helps us a lot to maintain our optimum in the HSP and in this way satisfy the demand for transfusions that we usually have.”

Meanwhile, Vivian Binvignat Flores, nurse and teacher at the School of Self-Care of the Faculty of Medicine, said that the blood donation campaign carried out “is a work of charity and also fills our hearts with being able to contribute with a grain of sand here to the people, and above all to the Coquimbo Hospital.”

One of the people who donated blood for the first time was Tonka Castillo Adaros, a second-year medical student, who noted that “I thought it was a good experience, there were a lot of motivated people, so everything went very well.”

With the promise of saving lives and the commitment of solidaritythis blood donation campaign will be held again in the month of October, a time in which it is expected to replicate the successful call for donors.
