The Creg’s penalties for waste of electricity are listed

Users who spend more electricity, according to their reference level, will have an additional charge on their bill. The reference level will be what they have spent in March 2024. The penalties were established by the Energy and Gas Regulation Commission (Creg). It is a measure to discourage energy consumption in the midst of the reservoir crisis, a product of the El Niño Phenomenon, which has put the possibility of energy rationing on the horizon.

This is the resolution of the Creg:

The penalties for using more electricity will increase according to the socioeconomic stratum. While for strata 1, 2 and 3 the penalty will be 30% per kilowatt of additional energy spent, for the high strata, 4, 5, and 6, it will be 50%. The resolution also establishes economic incentives for homes that save electricity.

I recommend this chapter of Scrambled Eggs to understand the energy mess in Colombia:

I also recommend this thread from our allies at “Economy for the Pipol” with all the details of the topic.
