The university campus dressed up yesterday. He dyed himself red to celebrate a new edition of the University Race and did so in a gala atmosphere, an excellent temperature for running –sun and 18 degrees, with no wind– and with more … of 1,100 participants (as expected, most of them young) in one of the different events that make up the sports day.
Although the bulk of the participants were students (either from the University itself, from others or even from Secondary or Vocational Training centers in the region), there were also some of the regulars in the community’s popular races, and they were the ones who mainly They occupied the main podiums: David Bartolomé and Esther Rodríguez in the 10,000 meter event, Guillermo García and Raquel Esteras – although this is not common – in the 5,000 meter tests. Even among the pre-university students, Miguel Monforte and Claudia Santos put two well-known faces in the Rioja athletic world on the 3,000 meter podium.
The most celebrated was the victory of IES Tomás Mingot as the center with the largest number of students reaching the finish line. The family race, with good participation, closed the day with an exhibition of qualities by the youngest athletes
In any case, the biggest celebration did not come from crossing the finish line first, but from doing so in good company. The students of IES Tomás Mingot were the ones who won the prize for the center with the greatest participation (153 of their students crossed the finish line) and now a day of beach and sports awaits them in Somo to receive a surfing lesson on the Cantabrian beach . Among the faculties or university schools, it was Science and Technology, with 31 athletes in the finish line, which won the same prize, although it was much less celebrated than in the case of Secondary school students.
Before ending the day, the little ones had the opportunity to demonstrate their qualities by participating in a non-competitive family test, also with good participation.
