Habaneros explode due to exorbitant prices

Residents in Havana, the Cuban capital, denounced the high prices of food at the Agricultural Fairs this Saturday to the Government of their territory.

The local authorities had announced an “Agricultural Fair in greeting to May Day in Havana,” for Saturday, April 27, which would cover the 15 municipalities.

According to information offered, “fresh and processed agricultural products by the productive and business system of the Ministry of Agriculture” would be marketed.

Some of the products that would be put on sale would include root vegetables, vegetables, grains, fruits, charcoal, processed products and canned fruits and vegetables.

The official website of the Government of Havana has been filled with complaints from residents of the capital.

Jose Dairon Batista wrote: “Here you have Santa María del Rosario, what prices. Go ahead, workers: rice (220 CUP/lb), imported rice (230 CUP/lb), taro (110 CUP/lb).”

“Whoever wants big garlic goes to the Loma and Tulipan farm,” said user Jose Antonio González, along with a photo that shows the price: “200 CUP for each unit.”

“The fairs were always held with cheaper prices than everyday ones. I come from the 124 fair in Marianao. “No state offers, all private and logically with very high prices,” summarized Dalia De Armas Rosario.

FOOD PRICES HAVANA

Some Havana residents recalled that very little can be done with current salaries in Cuba.

Rosa Herrera stated: “For Labor Day, they say. Do you think that the average worker’s salary is enough to buy that? In Marianao, very limited offer. I have tried a couple of Saturdays and I always come back disappointed, because of the offer, the lines… Etc.”

Along the same lines, Cristina Ricardo pointed out: “bananas at 45 and 50 pesos, beans, rice and vegetables at millionaire prices. Workers who live off a salary and retirees, look at how those who have money eat. “You can’t even eat it anymore.”

For her part, Sonia Villafuerte presented other prices at the Fair in Havana: “Cabbage full of bugs 30 per lb; sweet potato 30 lb; small, skinny and very dirty carrot 150 per bunch, medium garlic 50 per head, white onions 180 per lb.”
