May Jazzea adds six proposals on the street

The Mayo Jazzea jazz festival, which days ago announced the great figures on its lineup -Silvia Pérez Cruz, Jacky Terrasson, Immanuel Wilkins, Antonio Lizana and Joe Farnsworth Quartet-, now adds six parallel proposals that will take music to different corners of the city of Logroño through concerts, parades, workshops and even cinema.

Culture Rioja thus reinforces the festival on its twenty-fifth anniversary, “enriching the cultural life of our city, bringing music closer to all citizens and providing opportunities for local, national and international artists,” the Councilor for Promotion of the City stressed this morning. , Miguel Sainz.

Sainz has appeared alongside several of the local musicians participating in the event, which will spread jazz in open settings such as Parque Gallarza, the Market and San Bartolomé squares, and the old bus station.

After the opening of Mayo Jazzea, on May 9 at the Teatro Bretón with Joe Farnsworth Quartet feat Sarah Hananhan, a day later the Barcelona group Hip Horns Brass Collective will enter the scene with a concert in Gallarza Park (7:00 p.m.) and the subsequent parade departing from the same park (8:00 p.m.). At 9:00 p.m., the local group Los Saxos del Averno performs in the Market Square with their jazz for all audiences, fun and very danceable. “We make exotic rhythm and blues for restless hips” and to work up a sweat, warns Daniel Niño, one of its members.

On May 11, the Píccolo y Saxo School coordinates and participates in the Brass Band workshop that lasts in La Gota de Leche from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., open to any wind and percussion instrumentalist (to sign up, at culturalrioja@logroño.es ). In the words of Andrés Díez, it is “a unique event in Logroño and very important, because if a festival wants to have a cultural impact it has to include training.” After the workshop, the participants will leave La Gota (1:30 p.m.) on a parade through the city, a route they will repeat in the afternoon, leaving at 8:00 p.m. from Plaza de San Bartolomé. The day is completed with two more events: the Galician Ton Risco performs in the Plaza de San Bartolomé at 7:00 p.m. and the Barcelona-based Balkan Paradise Orchestra, in the Plaza del Mercado (9:00 p.m.).

On Sunday the 12th, the Saoco ensemble brings its Afro-Latin and New York jazz of the 60s and 70s to the old bus station, “a setting that at first surprises, but a very beautiful and secluded amphitheater,” says Gaspar Barbi, member of the formation.

Finally, the Rafael Azcona Film Library will host the screening of ‘Blue Giant’ on Tuesday, May 14 (7:30 p.m.), offering an amazing musical journey with animated images and saxophone sounds. And on the 15th, the Logroño public will hold a meeting with the composer and saxophonist Antonio Lizana at La Gota (8:00 p.m.), one day before his performance at the Bretón.
