The crude analysis of the general manager of Empresas Copec

The general manager of Empresas Copec –controlled by the Angelini group-, Eduardo Navarro, made a crude analysis of the political, economic and social situation that the country is going through.

Through a column in the internal corporate magazine, the executive maintained that “today, in addition, it is increasingly becoming more difficult to unite wills and reach majority agreements that, recognizing genuine differences, are capable of conceiving a common horizon, a better future for all”.

“Chile is going through a complex political moment. The deterioration of civic coexistence is evident. A political activity that seeks immediate reward has been sterile in articulating responses to the social pains of the population. The above has kept us in an economic stagnation that is mortgaging the growth opportunities and, consequently, delaying life projects and postponing the possibilities of well-being for our society,” he said.

Today the multinational Empresas Copec has assets productive in 16 countries and that “mobilizes, at a global level, an economy close to US$30 billion, comparable to the GDP of a country like Iceland,” Navarro highlighted.

In his opinion, this hopeless scenario It’s not just a local phenomenon.. “The lack of will to promote consensus has allowed the emergence of personalisms that have eroded democratic coexistence. In fact, according to a survey carried out in 2023 in Latin America and collected by The Economist magazine, an important part of the new generations does not know a system other than the democratic one and, therefore, do not value the latter. In this context, if there is no change in the perception of young people, support for democracy will continue to decrease to the extent that our older adults are no longer here,” Navarro added.

According to him, one of the determining factors is “short-termism, a silent enemy that has permeated all aspects of our modern society and that stands as one of the great evils of our time.” “A mentality that prioritizes immediate benefits over long term repercussions”, he added.

“In the political sphere, short-termism manifests itself in the pursuit of electoral victories, rather than the development of policies that address structural challenges and foster lasting well-being for society. Likewise, it represents a threat to the environment, since it drives the unbridled exploitation of natural resources and the degradation of the ecosystem. Thus, the lack of consideration for the long-term consequences of our actions is accelerating climate change, biodiversity loss and pollution,” he warned.
