The Government of Chubut participated this Tuesday afternoon in the 122nd anniversary of the plebiscite, from which a group of Welsh settlers declared themselves in favor of the Argentine position within the framework of a border award with Chile.

Representing the Government of the Province, the president of the Antarctic Institute of Colonization and Rural Development (IAC), Hora Massacese, the secretary of Science and Technology, Guillermo Defossé, and the regional delegate of the Ministry of Tourism and Protected Areas, Víctor Yáñez, attended. .

The commemorative ceremony began with the singing of the National Anthem of Argentina, then giving way to the placement of floral offerings at the foot of the monument that recognizes the Welsh people who have settled in the area since the late 19th century and to religious invocations.

The mayor of the Municipality of Trevelin, Héctor Ingram, and Herman Gómez, from the Welsh Association, were the main speakers at the event 122 years after a historic pronouncement for the Patagonian region and the country.

In their speeches, both highlighted the importance of this event that occurred in April 1902 in the “16 de Octubre” Valley, where Welsh settlers participated in a vote with a favorable result for the Argentine position.

The communal chief highlighted the values ​​of those pioneers and stated that “today we meet to honor those men and women who made a sovereign decision of such magnitude.”

The afternoon ended with the presentation of an artistic number that provoked loud applause from the public: primary school students performed the successful song “Mi Lugar” by Cordilleran musician Yoel Hernández.
