Every month the National Administrative Department of Statistics (DANE) publishes the unemployment report for Colombia. And Quibdó always appears as the capital city with the most general unemployment and the most youth unemployment.
According to the latest figures from DANE, unemployment in Colombia in March 2024 increased to 11.3% and in Quibdó it worsened to 29.7%, well above all other cities. And in youth unemployment, from 15 to 28 years old, Quibdó also occupies the disgraceful first place, with a figure of 36.4%. In other words, a large part of young Quibdoseños of working age are excluded from employment opportunities and Quibdó is losing a high percentage of the potential of the youth who, if today they had access to the required opportunities, could contribute to the social and economic development of the Chocó capital.
National government officials always repeat that Quibdó and Chocó are their “priority,” but the statistics contradict them.
Unemployment in Chocó is structural, due to the precarious agricultural and urban production in the department, the lack of manufacturing, industries, communication routes, poor coverage and quality of public services (health, energy, drinking water, connectivity, sewage, education). And to this is added the absurd and bestial official policy of destroying equipment and the mining sector, a key source of employment in Chocó, the reduction of employment in the public sector and the almost non-existent execution of infrastructure works and projects. productive.
The basis for reducing unemployment is compliance with the agreements signed in the various civic strikes in Chocó, agreements that have not been honored by governments at any level.
