The diocese of Córdoba and the cathedral chapter have called the first international sacred music composition competition «Bishop Hosius». In order to commemorate the 1700th anniversary of the Council of Nicea (year 325), which was presided over by the bishop of Cordoba, the diocese wants to provide sacred music to the Nicene-Constantinopolitan creed, the dogmatic declaration that emanated from it.
The first prize is endowed with €9,000and works can be presented until November 29th. On January 29, 2025, the choice of a maximum of four works will be announced that will be performed by the Córdoba Orchestra and the choir of the Cathedral of Córdoba in a public concert. Subsequently, on Friday, June 27, 2025, at 9:30 p.m. in the Cathedral of Córdoba, another concert will be held, at which end the jury’s verdict will be made public.
“It should not be forgotten that sacred music is requested, suitable for being performed during worship,” the diocese stated in the specifications for the competition. «Composers are recommended get advice about the Roman Catholic liturgy, and its tradition of sacred music, with the aim of acquiring sufficient sensitivity to, within its aesthetic freedom, create a work with the capacity for integration in the Eucharistic liturgical context for which it will be created,” they add. .
The works presented, which must last between 9 and 15 minutesthey must use in full the text of the Nicene-Constantinopolitan creed, either in Latin or in its current official Spanish translation.
