Valparaíso: Reinforcement in security, increased investment in health, housing, improvement of streets and sports infrastructure mark municipal management

  • The mayor of Valparaíso, Jorge Sharp, together with the directors of the different areas, detailed the progress and projects developed in the commune.

A series of significant advances in health, security, housing and improvement of public spaces, roads, community, health and sports infrastructure during the year 2023 were announced in a new Public Account carried out by Mayor Jorge Sharp, at the Theater Municipal of Valparaíso.

It should be noted that the formal document was delivered during the morning of this Tuesday, in an Extraordinary Council held in the Town Hall Building.

On the occasion, Mayor Sharp along with the directors reviewed what was developed and committed to the community of Valparaíso during the past year, mentioning that security, proximity, accessibility, credibility and transparency were the fundamental pillars of the management developed, thus supporting the housing development, health, tourism, cleanliness, connectivity and progress.

One of the main achievements in terms of citizen security was consolidate a preventive community patrol model 24/7, where the OS14 agreement with Carabineros was incorporated, which allowed strengthen operational capabilities and service to the community, in addition to redoubling the inspection team for national assets for public use.

Investment in health has also been one of the priorities of the Citizen Mayor’s Office, assuming health as a right and a requirement for well-being, which is why care was increased, continued to build the Popular Health Network together with the community largest in the country, which in 2023 served more than 112 thousand users, which generated savings in the pockets of Buenos Aires families of more than $1,130 million. In that same direction, the Communal Autism Center (CCAV) and the first municipal APS Specialty Center of the commune, the imaging unit, were inaugurated with an investment of $350 million.

In the social sphere, intense work was done to strengthen the alliance between community organizations and the Citizen Mayor’s Office, contributing to the improvement of people’s quality of life through sports, recreation and social well-being. This translates into subsidies for the financing of basketball and amateur soccer refereeing, approval of a greater number of projects between FONDEVE and FONDEPORTE. 10 popular football and basketball schools were opened. Investment was made in improving public spaces, roads, community, health and sports infrastructure that reached an amount close to $9 billion, with 56 initiatives implemented that contributed to improving the quality of life of more than 50 thousand residents and providing employment to hundreds. of people.

In terms of housing, progress was made in obtaining resources for specialty studies for the urbanization of 335 camp families, in the assisted self-construction of homes for families affected by the Ramaditas, Rocuant and San Roque fire, and in the financing process of the Tassara project, whose destination will be fair rent.

INVESTMENT

Regarding investment, stood out the paving of more than seven kilometers in Playa Ancha for nearly $2.8 billion. The paving by the PAVIPAR program and the improvements of the Almendral and Cerro Toro neighborhoods, through the “I want my neighborhood Program.” In addition, via SUBDERE and FNDR funds, thanks to the support of more than 3,600 residents, $5,000 million was awarded for the replacement of 5,108 luminaires in the city plan to LED technology. Likewise, important agreements were signed with the SUBDERE, through the Recovery Program for Urban Centers in the Bellavista sector and the “Revive Neighborhoods” Program, which will allow addressing, in 10 years, the recovery of the Barrio Puerto and the heritage site. world.

In terms of operations, managed to advance in 46 civil works such as stairs, railings and retaining walls; Also, thanks to a supply contract, respond to the citizen demand of neighbors and demolish nearly 30 properties with sources of crime in different parts of the commune. Likewise, together with the community, 49 “Everything to the streets” operations were carried out, removing more than 600 tons of garbage and preventing it from reaching the streams. Along with this, more than 40 thousand square meters of weeding were organized in critical points and more than 200 thousand linear meters of firebreaks were generated. Water is a human right and today nearly 5,000 Buenos Aires families depend on municipal cistern trucks to have this resource.

Buenos Aires economic development focused on contributing to the economic reactivation of local commerce and tourism. We worked with eight commercial neighborhoods and their unions, promoting the Valpo Card to 100 along with more than 70 commercial premises. More than 22 groups of citizen fairs were organized, investing resources to improve the facilities of the Railway Terminal that receives more than two million passengers and, together with public institutions, port operators and tourism organizations, a plan was pushed that allowed increase cruise calls that brought more than 40 thousand passengers.

One of the most relevant milestones promoted by the Citizen Mayor’s Office occurred on March 8, 2023, when within the framework of the International Day of Working Women, The “Gender Directorate: Women and Diversities” was created, being the first in Chile. Through this, initiatives have been promoted such as: Guidance and attention to violence, training and socio-education in gender equality; Community Center for diversities and dissidence, Casa Taller; SERNAMEG collaborative programs; “Utopian” Building, the “Juntas” Festival and the “We are the Jewel” Program.

HERITAGE AND CULTURE

Another important milestone was the creation of the Municipal Corporation for the Administration of the World Heritage Site of Valparaíso, which allowed a strengthening of the relationship between UNESCO, the State, the Municipality and the communities, with the principle that the preservation of this important place For the world it is possible, if it is part of the social and community dynamics of those who inhabit it.

Among the main innovations produced in the cultural field is the Communal Table of Cultures and Participatory Budgets, having managed to forge a path around the decommissioning of cultural resources.

Finally, in the Municipal Corporation of Valparaíso, the nominal debt of the institution is not only contained, but has also been reduced. Thus, from 2016 to 2023 the debt has decreased by 57%.

CHALLENGES

Mayor Jorge Sharp, emphatic about the challenges for this year, referred to the Agreement for Valparaíso, which will allow participation in the wealth of the port, a new Port-City relationship, generating employment from the expansion of port activity. given by the construction and operation of new cargo and passenger terminals, increasing economic activity, since when the first cruise ship dock in the country is built, tourism will be projected as a roofless industry.
