A key milestone was the entry into force of the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) on August 11, 2020, a signing that significantly strengthened trade ties between both nations. Colombia stood out as Israel’s second Latin American partner, opening doors to a fluid exchange of goods and services.

This trade agreement, which involved the tariff reduction of up to 99% in some sectors, It fostered a constant flow of Colombian exports to Israel, mainly in the agricultural and agro-industrial fields.

The embassies in Bogotá and Tel Aviv became fundamental pillars for continued dialogue and collaboration between both countries. Additionally, the presence of a vibrant Jewish community in Colombia has contributed to further strengthening ties. cultural and commercial between the two nations, creating an environment conducive to mutual growth.

However, during the Labor Day mobilizations, President Gustavo Petro announced the breaking of all relations with this country due to the “genocide” against the Palestinians.

Colombia’s relationship with Israel

For Colombia, Israel has become a key trade partner. During the last 27 years, exports to the Middle Eastern country have had an annual increase of 12.6%, according to data from OEC World. Likewise, products such as emeralds and thermal coal have found a solid market in Israel, while emerging sectors such as cybersecurity and medicinal cannabis have provided new business prospects.

Among the Colombian products with the greatest export to Israel are:

  • Thermal coals: USD 340.37 million.
  • Unroasted and undecaffeinated coffees: USD 21.22 million.

However, President Gustavo Petro’s recent statements will put all relations with the Jewish state on hold. It is crucial to understand that any break in diplomatic relations between both countries would have a significant impact on bilateral trade.
