The meeting was convened by the National Bioeconomy Secretariat and headed by the head of that area. Fernando Vilella.

The officials addressed the problems generated by the corn leafhopper and Spiroplasma pests.

De Los Ríos explained that the technical team of the Ministry of Production and Sustainable Development has been touring the province, surveying different lots, and detecting the severity of the situation.

“Clearly the corn planted late is the most affected, in some lots the loss is total. In general terms we believe that, of the Salta production, which is around 450 thousand hectares, 40% will be affected,” said the minister.

And he added: “In Salta, between the price relationship, leafhopper damage, and freight costs, it is going to be very difficult to send corn to the ports. So we will have to fatten more steers.”

Subsequently, a commitment was signed to “join efforts in the face of the unexpected outbreak of the disease called “Corn Stunt”, which has seriously affected the state of corn cultivation in our regions.”

The signed document also ensures that “all necessary measures are being taken between the Provinces and the National Government, as well as agricultural producers, to be prepared for the next corn planting that will begin in the coming months.”

The national government agreed that in relation to the financing that producers who suffer very large losses will need, in addition to the lines in force at Banco Nación, the possibilities of making specific emergency lines available will be studied.
