The first nursing and oncology conferences organized by professionals from different areas of the Dr. Gustavo Fricke Hospital were successfully held.

With broad participation, the “First days of nursing and oncology” organized by the team of hematologists and nurses from the Dr. Gustavo Fricke Hospital, which were open to the entire community associated with the care of cancer patients.

The topics that were addressed, led by experts in the field, were associated with clinical management, outpatient treatment of cancer patients, anemia, monoclonal antibodies and theoretical concepts regarding bone marrow transplantation, among others.

Dr. Christine Rojas, hematologist at the Dr. Gustavo Fricke Hospital and director of the day that was held together with the Lucas Sierra Foundation, pointed out that they had been studying for some time the possibility of holding a meeting focused on the work of the sick.

“The truth is that for a long time we had the concern with my nurse supervisor to do an activity that was specific and designed for nurses, because they are the pillar of daily clinical work and rarely have something that is specific for them. So we sat down to discuss the topics that interested us and we worked with the Lucas Sierra Foundation to be able to do it and it was an extraordinarily pleasant experience. (People have come) from the hospital, from the Reñaca Clinic, from the Van Buren hospital, they have come from private clinics. And there are two little girls who came from Puerto Montt, so our hearts are full.”

Catalina Novoa, supervising nurse of adult Hematology at the Dr. Gustavo Fricke Hospital and one of the organizers commented on the main objectives of the meeting. “Its objective, on the one hand, is to highlight the role of the nurse in the different areas related to oncology. And the other important thing is also to show what teamwork does in relation to patient care. So, that’s why there are presentations from both doctors and nurses and some are specifically, how the nursing role in conjunction with the medical role impacts the clinical outcomes of patients. Those are the two main issues.”

Elizabeth Tosso, nurse in the Ambulatory Chemotherapy Unit of the Gustavo Fricke Hospital and one of the speakers highlighted how enriching it was to share similar experiences with colleagues from other hospitals. “A very enriching day for everyone, to be able to tell the baseline experience at a regional level and actually replicate the idea to other hospitals that are very similar to ours. The idea of this nursing day that was established is to be able to share clinical experiences, find more and more information regarding pathologies and have a truly global and unified management of the experience.”
