To increase knowledge about the prevention of anomalies in fetal development, specialists from the Provincial Center of Medical Genetics of Santiago de Cuba urge today.

According to Dr. Margarita Argüelles Arza, director of the institution, professionals who work in the Maternal and Child Care Program in the communities must increase health promotion on genetic diseases and congenital malformations, so that women of childbearing age understand the importance of family planning and preconception reproductive risk consultations to reach pregnancy in the best possible conditions.

The specialist highlighted the benefits of adopting healthy habits such as daily consumption of folic acid, a balanced diet, regular physical exercise and not self-medication during the preconception period, to minimize or eliminate factors that may represent significant risks for the maternal and fetal health.

In this sense, she considered the development of educational initiatives for these women, their family and the community to be crucial in order to promote self-responsibility, especially in the group of those who suffer from chronic diseases.

Prevention, he noted, is essential. However, in the current context it reaches extraordinary relevance, given the severe economic limitations that the country faces, as a result of the policy of economic asphyxiation maintained by the United States against Cuba.

Precisely, 2023 was a period marked by difficulties in the fulfillment of programs such as Chromosome Diagnosis.

According to Argüelles Arza, high coverage was not achieved due to limitations in the laboratories for diagnosing chromosomal diseases, which has significantly impacted prenatal studies. TO Despite the efforts made, the situation remains tense.

Hence the urgent need to address these challenges and promote a culture of prevention in Santiago women of childbearing age in the communities.
