A varied lineup of events and shows will be offered in May by the Municipal Theater of Viña del Marwhich after 14 years will be part of Heritage Day so that Viñamarinos can visit this National Monument and thus discover its beauty after the restoration that was carried out after the damage caused by the earthquake of February 27, 2010.

The May program includes plays, ballet and concerts – several of them free – and will begin on Friday, May 3 with the Gala of the National Folkloric Ballet (BAFONA) to celebrate its 59th anniversary.

The presentation begins at 7:30 p.m. and will feature a traditional repertoire of the cast with typical dances from Chiloé, Rapa Nui, musical soloists and huasos. There will also be a recognition space for members of the Ballet. This activity is co-produced with the Seremi de las Culturas y el Heritage Valparaíso Region. Entry with prior registration.

Chinese Dances

On Thursday, May 9, at 7:00 p.m., the Chinese dance show “Colorful World-Dance and Youth” from the Minzu University of the south center will be presented, which culminates a tour of Latin America in Viña del Mar.

The group is made up of 18 teachers and students from the School of Music and Dance, and its presentation includes a solo of the traditional Mongolian instrument Morin juur and 8 samples of Chinese dances (folk, Mongolian, Uighur, Kazakh, Tibetan folk, ethnic Dai and classical Chinese) Free entry with prior registration.

Theater

For Saturday, May 11, at 7:00 p.m., the play “Gladys” by Eliza Zulueta is scheduled, with a staging with the actors Catalina Saavedra, Elisa Zulueta, Antonia Santa María, Álvaro Viguera, Sergio Hernández and Coca Guazzini.

The presentation of the award-winning play is part of Theater Day in Chile and tells the story of Gladys, who suffers from Asperger’s syndrome and whom her family “exiled” 20 years ago. In the middle of a family celebration, Gladys arrives as a surprise and without any resentment, to visit her family, which will transform the tranquility of this Christmas party. Zorba the Greek

On Friday, May 17, at 7:00 p.m., the Santiago Ballet will present the Ballet Zorba the Greek, the work of the choreographer Lorca Massine, with the Artistic Direction of César Morales, Music by Mikis Theodorakis and recorded music by the Santiago Philharmonic Orchestra, under the musical direction of Pedro-Pablo Prudencio.

Inspired by the novel by Nikos Kazantzakis and the film by Michael Cacoyannis, the work is set in a town in Greece, where John falls in love with Marina and Zorba with Hortensia. Due to various events, both women die and they are left alone. Free entry with prior registration.

-Thursday, May 23, 8:00 p.m.: National artist Cami presents her show “Anna estar alucinada”, which includes songs from her new production, as well as remakes of her best-known songs (tickets through www.passline.com)

-Saturday, May 25, 7:00 p.m.: Nano Stern returns to the stage with a tour of Chile and Latin America, where he will review his extensive creative career. This new staging with Cristián Carvacho and Ramiro Durán, both virtuoso multi-instrumentalists, adds a layer of versatility and depth to the musical experience (tickets at Ticketmaster.cl)

-Thursday, May 30, 8:30 p.m.: The New York rock and indie rock band “Interpol” perform to celebrate the anniversary of their albums Turn On the Bright Lights (2002) and Antics (2004). Sold out.

Heritage Day

After 14 years, the Municipal Theater joins the celebration of Heritage Day (May 25 and 26), opening its doors to those who wish to visit it (registration at https://linktr.ee/teatromunivina).

In this context, on Sunday, May 26 at 5:00 p.m., the Chilean Air Force symphonic band will perform, under the direction of maestro Fabrizzio de Negri, who will perform a classic rock concert with music by the Beatles, Queen and Pink Floyd. Free entry with prior registration.
