When speaking before the General Assembly, the island’s permanent representative to the organization, Ernesto Soberón, recognized the need for economic and social development, justice and equity to promote peace for all.

The diplomat rejected the promotion of destabilization, unconventional war tactics and changes to legitimately constituted orders; as well as the manipulation of human rights against developing countries, while he remains complicitly silent in the face of the atrocities committed by rich countries.

“The promotion of false exceptionalism, hate speech and supremacist, racist and xenophobic ideas also constitutes a direct attack on the culture of peace,” he stressed.

The ambassador recalled that for more than six decades the Cuban people have suffered the imposition of the longest economic, commercial and financial blockade at the hands of the United States, with a direct, daily and very negative impact on the quality of life of Cubans.

This policy, he added, opportunistically intensified during the pandemic and with the unjustifiable inclusion of Cuba in the fraudulent list of State sponsors of terrorism; Together with disinformation and unconventional warfare, they contravene the notion of a culture of peace.

Soberón ratified his country’s commitment to the implementation of the Declaration and Program of Action on a Culture of Peace as well as International Law, the Charter of the United Nations and the Proclamation of Latin America and the Caribbean as a Zone of Peace.

However, a world of peace will continue to be a utopia, as long as multilateralism and cooperation are not privileged, our legitimate differences are disrespected and hegemonic appetites are favored, he added in this regard.

The diplomat also denounced the veto exercised by the United States to prevent Palestine from joining as full members of the UN, which shows the lack of real commitment to the two-state solution.

In his opinion, this fact demonstrates, for the umpteenth time, Washington’s complicity with the genocide against the Palestinian people with all impunity and in front of the eyes of the international community.

According to Soberón, it is laughable to think that there can be a culture of peace while 34,000 people, mostly women and children, as well as humanitarian and United Nations personnel, have died under Israel’s indiscriminate attacks in Gaza.
