Several children from Sancti Spiritus moved pieces in the 57th version of the Capablanca in Memoriam 2024 International Chess Tournament, which enlivened the halls of the Habana Libre hotel in the Cuban capital for several days and attracted the participation of representatives from 27 nations.
Registered in the traditional Looking for a Capablanca, which brought together the youngest talent in the Under-16 and Under-12 year categories, six jigsaw players from the yard made up the large group of nearly 200 participants from all Cuban provinces and countries such as Spain, Mexico and Colombia.
In the sextet, the best scores were given to Nailé Pupo Guerra from Cabaiguan, who won silver in the U-12 women’s team, while Samuel González Gómez from Taguas came second in the U-8 team (he was previously champion at the age of six).
These medals took Sancti Spíritus to seventh place by province, in a competition in which Matanzas, Havana and Camagüey occupied the first positions.
In the opinion of Yordan Urquiza, provincial chess commissioner, “the boys were super good and the performance by Carlos Ernesto Piedra Toboso from Cabaiguan can also be considered a good performance, who came in seventh place among 85 competitors and it must be taken into account that here “The best of Cuba gathered.”
In addition, Enmanuel González Gómez (Samuel’s brother) and brothers Yordan and Jonathan Pérez Oramas, from Jatibonico, took part.
But, beyond the medals, the essential success is that the tournament served to stimulate the talent and passion of the youngest team in the science game, as well as the exchange of friendship and knowledge between the participants beyond the boards.
After the curtains of the Capablanca close, those of the traditional “Guillermito García” in Villa Clara will open, and in which, according to the provincial commissioner of the discipline, our main exponent, Kemel Gallo, will fight to achieve his third standard of International Master.
