Canada alerts its citizens about risks of traveling to Cuba: shortages and crimes

Although Canada continues to be the main source of tourists to Cuba, this week its government issued an alert to its citizens about the risks of traveling to the island, emphasizing food shortages and some crimes. All this in a year where several incidents have tarnished the leisure sector in Cuban hotels.

This May 6, the government of the northern country updated its travel alerts to Cuba and asked its citizens to “exercise a high degree of caution” on vacations or family visits.

“In Cuba, exercise extreme caution. Be very careful in Cuba due to shortages of basic necessities, including food, medicine and fuel (…) faces a chronic and severe shortage of essential items, including: food, bottled water, public water supply, medicine, fuel. Fuel shortages are currently critical and affect a wide range of services. Traveling around the island is a great challenge,” they detail in their alert.

Regarding the fuel situation, Canada warns on its trips to Cuba that not even paying for a rental car is one safe from being stranded in the middle of nowhere.

“There are intermittent shortages of drinking water supplied by the municipalities, even in Havana and in tourist centers,” they add.

They expand that the blackouts on the island, which currently last more than 12 hours for the neighborhoods on the island, may also affect some hotels.

“Hotels and resorts, which often use generators during power outages, may not be able to maintain their services (…) The shortage may cause interruptions in other essential services. There are often long queues at gas stations that have led to altercations,” they continue to warn.

As for crimes, they talk about scams, overcharging for some products, fraud can occur with credit cards and ATMs, as well as violent crimes and minor crimes such as robberies in hotels.
