Honoring the Bogotá River: A meeting of ancestral wisdom and actions for the environment

In a collective effort to recover the Bogotá River, indigenous leaders and authorities from Cundinamarca met in the emblematic Guacheneque moor, in Villapinzón, the heart of the source of the tributary. This symbolic act, carried out in the week prior to Bogotá River Day, on May 12, highlights the importance of unity and commitment to the environment.

The event, led by the Regional Autonomous Corporation of Cundinamarca (CAR), included the participation of the director of the entity, Alfred Ballesteros, who emphasized the continuation of joint efforts for the ecosystem recovery of the river. This plan focuses on the rehabilitation of areas of environmental importance throughout the basin, marking a milestone in the search for solutions to pollution and environmental degradation.

As part of the tribute act, the Muisca and Kichwa communities of Sesquilé carried out a ritual of forgiveness and gratitude, symbolizing the deep connection with the river and the land. The presence of figures such as the governor of Cundinamarca, Jorge Emilio Rey; the judge of the Administrative Court of Cundinamarca, Nelly Yolanda Villamizar; and the mayors of Villapinzón, Cajicá, Guatavita and Sesquilé, together with environmental groups and control organizations, reflected the diversity of voices united by a common objective.

The ritual is part of the “Water Fabric” initiative, a tour of the Bogotá River basin that seeks to connect communities and promote environmental awareness through the exchange of experiences and knowledge. This start in the El Salitre WWTP Metropolitan Park in Bogotá highlights the relevance of large-scale projects in the decontamination of the river, and highlights the crucial role of citizen oversight bodies and environmental groups in this process.

The Tejido de Aguas caravan will continue on its way to Chía, Funza, Soacha, Apulo, culminating in Girardot. In this itinerary, the municipalities share a jar of water, symbolizing the constant flow of life and the shared desire to see the Bogotá River reborn and flow free of pollution.
