La Guajira at risk, they do not have a Fire Department

The Attorney General’s Office warned about the precarious conditions of provision of this essential service of the volunteer Fire Department in the department of La Guajira, in which more than 70% of the municipalities do not have contracts or agreements to date and those who have not signed do not They guarantee the continuity and financial sufficiency necessary to provide an efficient service.

Given the critical situation that the department presents, the control entity summoned the National Directorate of Firefighters of Colombia, the Ministry of the Interior, the Government of La Guajira and the Departmental Delegation of Firefighters, in order to remember the legal obligations in matters of financing the service and generate alternatives to make the provision of this essential service effective in all the municipalities of the jurisdiction.

At this table, the minimum equipment and conditions that a fire department needs for its operation in the face of its low financing, the current state of the provision of this service by the municipalities of the Department of La Guajira, and the need to strengthen fire departments as first response agencies to the effects of the El Niño and La Niña climate phenomena that have greatly affected the communities of this jurisdiction.
