Where and how do the 12 foreign criminal gangs operate in Chile?

Currently, our country is facing a security crisis due, in part, to the arrival of organized crime. Although this phenomenon is not a crime in itself, the National Prosecutor’s Office defines it as a set of crimes in which a group of people participate in an organized manner, planning each step. Furthermore, these criminal organizations can operate both inside and outside the country.

According to the most recent figures managed by the Public Ministry (until April 2024), they are operating throughout the national territory 12 criminal gangs, coming from various Latin American countries. Specifically, 67% of these are installed in the Metropolitan region. Likewise, among the most repeated crimes are drug trafficking and extortion and, to a lesser extent, homicides, human trafficking and other crimes.

In this Infinita explains, we tell you who these gangs are, where they are located and what their way of operating is.
