Bishops of Chile to communicators and catechists: Announcement of the Gospel in the media and at the beginning of Christian life

In Chile today, May 11, catechists are celebrated and tomorrow, Sunday, May 12, the day of the Feast of the Ascension of the Lord, coincides throughout the world with the World Day of Social Communications.

In this context and inspired by the text of Mark 16:15, “Go into all the world proclaiming the Good News to all mankind,” The Chilean episcopate issued a message addressed to social communicators and catechists thanking “making the word of Christ present in the world” and the accompaniment of “so many children, young people and adults in their processes of initiation into Christian life.”

Considering that “the media and new technologies” (…) “contribute every day to spreading the Good News of the Kingdom”, they highlighted that “it is important to see the digital and communications world not only as a ‘means for’, but also as a space to live together and evangelize. We must continue to advance in a more effective understanding of this reality and in technical and pastoral training that allows us to inhabit social networks from the Gospel”, taking a paragraph from the Pastoral Guidelines of the local Church.

A specific paragraph was deserved by communicators “from all walks of life, beyond the Church”: “It is essential to put ourselves at the service of truth, justice and fraternity, fleeing misinformation and lack of honesty and integrity. “Authentic social communication is a transcendental service for a more humane and democratic society.”

Imploring “from the Lord the breath of his Spirit for the Church,” they asked that he “encourage us to continue proclaiming Jesus Christ, walking together.”
